As winter nears an end over the next several weeks, we have something you may want to start to think about.
Preparing for next winter. "Hey, woah...slow your roll!" We can almost hear you saying that, and we don't blame you. Here's the thing, though. It would be a really good idea to start planning ahead for the things you could do to make your house more heat efficient during the long winter months. Think about what we've been experiencing lately. The bitter cold spell showcases the areas in our home we wish we had done something about before it got cold. Specifically, drafts. The ones that come from gaps, cracks, and opening in your home's foundation. They could also be coming from windows that are letting air in around their frame. Or how about doors that have older seals, where you feel a draft on those cold, windy winter nights. All of these things are able to be addressed, but it starts with three very important steps. Do these steps now, and you'll be much happier when next winter rolls around. 1. Research: Don't just slap a band-aid on a broken leg. What does that mean? Do your research. Read. Ask questions. Have a professional take a look at the area you are trying to fix. Proper preparation before the fact will help remove much of your band-aid fix frustration that doesn't solve the problem later. 2. Save: Start setting aside money each month to put towards those projects. Let your research dictate what that number is, and then commit to start saving now. Let's say you need $250 to fix something. It's much easier to swallow when you set aside $50 a month for 5 months, vs. staring at that bill on a cold night in November when it says $250, and you have to come up with it on the spot. 3. Schedule it: Get your project on the calendar. Pick an "end date". That means, pick a date when your project will be completed and paid for, so that you aren't up against the clock, and unpredictable Mother Nature. That will help you be able to research and save, with a completion goal in mind. Let's face it, WNY winters are no joke. Getting ahead of them is the best case scenario for making the most of them. These tips will help you and your family enjoy that time instead of running around trying to slap together a make-shift fix on a budget you didn't account for. Done with preparation and planning, you can get the most out of winter, instead of it getting the better of you. Research. Save. Schedule it. Let us know if you have any questions along the way.
